Dear Chris,

I have been using the Cleanitise products for about 6 months now in my home and have been so pleased with the results plus the fact that you don’t need to buy additional cleaning products! I work part time as a Practice & Diabetes Nurse in a GP surgery and have a busy family life with 2 young children and a dog! I use it every day in my kitchen to clean the surfaces – I have also used it to clean the oven, hob, fridge etc etc. It is fantastic on oven doors leaving them grease and smear free. I have used the products in every room in the house instead of antibacterial spray, shower and bath cleaner. I even took the spray away on holiday with us whilst camping! The “Perfect Scents” gives the same results but with a superb aroma also which lasts for ages. In summary I don’t want to use anything else to clean my home! Thank you Chris for giving me the opportunity to use it!

German tests link bean sprouts to deadly E. coli

New data released in Germany strongly suggests that locally produced bean sprouts were, as suspected, the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak. Officials initially blamed the E. coli, which has killed 29 people, on imported cucumbers, then bean sprouts. Some 3,000 people have been taken ill with the German outbreak of E. coli, which involves a previously unknown strain of the bacterium. Sufferers may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) where bacteria attack the kidneys and nervous system, giving them fits and often forcing them on to dialysis. (BBC News 10 June 2011)

Whether or not they are responsible for the current E. coil outbreak in Germany, sprouted seeds, unlike other fresh produce, present an unusual safety problem. Bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coil 0157:1-17 can, if present, multiply during germination and sprouting so that the sprouted seeds become a vehicle for transmission of these pathogens, especially if consumed uncooked with meals such as salads.

A recent study showed that supermarket shopping trolleys have more germs than public toilets, with shopping trolley handles contaminated with a variety of bodily fluids (eg urine, saliva, blood, mucus or faeces). Most shopping trolleys would fail a basic hygiene test.

The hygiene of shopping trolleys and baskets has been questioned in several public forums with concerns relating to potential disease transmission caused by environmental contamination, contact by multiple handlers and placing young children into seats and the trolley itself.

Whilst not aware of any evidence proving an epidemiological link between shopping trolleys and the transmission of disease, it is important to clarify the requirements for maintaining and cleaning these items. Supermarkets and food retailers must ensure that all shopping trolleys and baskets are adequately and hygienically maintained.

Supermarket trolleys and baskets are considered to be equipment under the Food Safety Standards. “A machine, instrument, apparatus, utensil or appliance, other than a single-use item, used or intended to be used on or in connection with food handling and includes any equipment used or intended to be used to clean food premises or equipment”.  As supermarket trolleys and baskets are used for the collection and transportation of food prior to sale, by definition, they are used for the handling of food. Most food placed into a trolley or basket will already be packaged or wrapped. However, some items, such as fruits and vegetables, may not be bagged or wrapped prior to being placed on or in such equipment.

Under the Food Standards Code, all food retailers have a responsibility to maintain trolleys and baskets to a standard of cleanliness where there is no accumulation of food waste, dirt, grease, or other visible matter
