Following strict tests, Cleanitise has been awarded further accreditation to combat the deadly E. coli, responsible for the deaths of 29 peole recently…

German tests link bean sprouts to deadly E. coli

New data released in Germany strongly suggests that locally produced bean sprouts were, as suspected, the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak. Officials initially blamed the E. coli, which has killed 29 people, on imported cucumbers, then bean sprouts. Some 3,000 people have been taken ill with the German outbreak of E. coli, which involves a previously unknown strain of the bacterium. Sufferers may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) where bacteria attack the kidneys and nervous system, giving them fits and often forcing them on to dialysis. (BBC News 10 June 2011)

Whether or not they are responsible for the current E. coil outbreak in Germany, sprouted seeds, unlike other fresh produce, present an unusual safety problem. Bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coil 0157:1-17 can, if present, multiply during germination and sprouting so that the sprouted seeds become a vehicle for transmission of these pathogens, especially if consumed uncooked with meals such as salads.

Published back in 2004, but still relevant today, Review of the microbiological risks associated with sprouted seeds (Review 41) pulls together information from the scientific literature on the microbiological risks associated with sprouted seeds, including potential sources of contamination during seed production, sprouting, harvesting, packing, storage and distribution. Visit www.campden.co.uk to order a copy or for more details.

Following strict tests carried out by Abbott Analytical, an independent laboratory and consulting scientists to the disinfectant industry, Cleanitise has been awarded further accreditiation to combat Escherichia coli (E. coli).

G4S is one of the largest private sector operators of ambulances in the UK has started using Cleanitise technology to ensure all vehicles are clean and free of contamination at all times.

G4S is one of the largest private sector operators of ambulances in the UK, ensuring that patients are moved day and night as comfortably and securely as possible. The division covering Surrey – based in Dorking – has recently started using Cleanitise technology to ensure all vehicles are clean and free of contamination at all times. Neil Nixon, editor of Cleaning and Maintenance discovered that the results so far have been amazing.

G4S has established an expertise with people, transportation and vehicle design enabling it to provide safe, comfortable and punctual ‘round the clock’ transport services for patients of all mobility levels.

Its primary objectives are to deliver a professional patient experience and high quality care, offering a service that exceeds expectations.

Paul Jennings, director of healthcare logistics at G4S Integrated Services (UK) Ltd, explained: “We currently provide over 700,000 patient journeys per year using fleets of specially constructed ambulances and teams of motivated staff operating from well-equipped control centres. We provide nonemergency patient transport services for customers such as Barking, Havering & Redbridge NHS Hospitals Trust, Epsom & St Helier NHS University Hospitals Trust, St Georges NHS Trust, and Surrey Primary Care Trust.”

The Passenger Transfer Service, or PTS, is a growing part of the G4S business, a company traditionally know for providing security services under the guise of Group 4. It is a competitive market, with a number of big players at the table. So how does G4S differentiate itself from the rest?

“The Quality Care Commission sets down a number of standards by which all PTS providers must operate,” said Jennings. “At G4S we are committed to exceeding these requirements, and one area where we are making significant headway is in the cleanliness of our vehicles. This is being recognised at tender stage and, most importantly, is appreciated by our passengers.”

And this is where Cleanitise steps in. Chris Luxton, owner and developer of the Cleanitise brand, has spent several years perfecting this cleaning fluid and establishing a ‘process’ of pre-checks, cleaning and post-checks using black light technology. G4S has adopted the process, using Cleanitise in a fogging system for periodic deep-cleaning of all vehicles, and Cleanitise in trigger sprays for daily work. The black light is always on hand to check that the job has been done correctly.

“Using Cleanitise and the black light has made a huge difference to us,” continued Paul Jennings. “As well as enabling us to confirm our vehicles are totally clean before we put then back on the road, the black light is also an excellent training aid as it can be used to teach our staff which areas need the greatest attention when being cleaned.”

The Cleanitise cleaning fluid is the product of many years of development by Chris Luxton, and is now accompanied by a ‘fragrant’ version called Perfect Scents. Critically, the finished product has a 99.99% certified kill rate on all bacteria related to healthcare acquired infections. This gives G4S the peace of mind it requires.

“The Quality Care Commission hasn’t yet set a standard for vehicle cleanliness so we have set our own very high targets,” said Jennings. “We are committed to raising the bar in passenger transport services, and ensuring the safety of our passengers through vehicle cleanliness is key. Passenger satisfaction is ultimately our number one goal, and the feedback we receive confirms that the cleanliness of our vehicles is of critical importance to our customers. I have great confidence in the Cleanitise product – backed by the black light – and our passengers are certainly delighted with the results.”

Another benefit of the Cleanitise cleaning regime adopted by G4S in Surrey is its portability. “We don’t have a centralised vehicle maintenance facility in our region,” explained Paul Jennings. “It is therefore a huge advantage being able to deep-clean vehicles wherever they are stationed. We can use the fogging system anywhere, and Cleanitise even provides us with a certificate of compliance for each vehicle once it has been deepcleaned and passed the black light inspection. Exactly what we need. Keeping our vehicles on the road is critical to our business and the service we offer – the ability to clean them ‘in situ’ is an essential tool in achieving this.”

Chris Luxton’s dedication to getting the Cleanitise process right is a lesson to us all. He has never been satisfied with ‘good enough’ – he has continually sought the ‘ultimate solution’. G4S might well argue that he has found it.

The Hospital superbug Clostridium Difficile has claimed the lives of 300 people in the last year. Cleanitise is proven to combat the spread of this superbug.

A HOSPITAL superbug has claimed the lives of 300 people in the last year, reports Liz Perkins, Health Reporter for the South Wales Evening Post.

There were 23 cases of Clostridium Difficile (C.Diff) alone last month in hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Of those, a total of 18 were in the 66-plus age group and a further five cases were reported in the 2-65 age group.

Meanwhile, in Hywel Dda Health Board’s hospitals in Carmarthenshire, between October 1, 2009, and September 30, 2010, there were 173 cases of C. Diff out of 21,178 hospital admissions. The rate of the superbug stood at 8.17 per 100,000 admissions.

Tony Jewell, chief medical officer for Wales, revealed the levels of death linked to C. Diff in the Infection Prevention and Control conference at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium.

It emerged during the event — which is understood to be the first of its kind in Wales — that healthcare-associated infections are costing the NHS a total of £87 million a year.

Dr Jewell said: “In Wales, 300 people a year have C.Diff associated with their death.

“The reasons why the figure has gone up is C.Diff was not recognised before.

“We are looking, seeking and finding why it’s gone up.

“It remains a cause of death, and underlining cause or a contributory cause of death.”

But he said that between February last year, and February this year there was a downward trend of cases in evidence.

He added: “Clinicians are seeing this as their priority.”

Dr Jewell said ward sisters in particular were doing all they could to tackle the problem and make it their priority.

Transparent

“One of the messages today is about sharing information about infection rates and being transparent about it,” he added.

“There’s still work to do.”

The aim of the conference, which was jointly organised by Swansea University and the Assembly Government, and took place in Swansea’s Liberty Stadium, was to discuss the latest developments in the prevention and control of infection.

An Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board spokeswoman said good progress was being made in its hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. It said that in January there were 17 cases of the superbug — 15 in the 66-plus category and two in the 2-65 age group. In December there were 32 cases.

The spokeswoman said: “ABMU Health Board has achieved a 31 per cent reduction in C.Diff cases over the last year, and has the lowest number of cases in Wales when compared to other large health boards.”

A Hywel Dda Health Board spokeswoman said: “Hywel Dda Health Board monitors every C.diff case to ensure they are managed appropriately. “Infection prevention and control, pharmacy and medical staff are involved and the findings are fed back to clinical teams regularly. All wards also undertake monthly hand hygiene audits with the results fed back to staff.

“All patients with C.Diff are provided with a care bundle to ensure they are nursed in a side room to prevent the spread of infection, are prescribed appropriate antibiotics, hand hygiene is undertaken after every contact, and equipment is decontaminated appropriately after use.”

“The environment is cleaned on a daily basis with disinfectant and they are offered hand washing before every meal.”

View original South Wales Evening Post report here.

Chris Luxton of Cleanitise said:

The ability of the Clostridium Difficile bacterium to form spores (which other causes of diarrhoea, such as salmonella cannot do) enables it to survive for long periods in the environment, e.g. on floors and around toilets in hospitals, care homes or even ambulances. The organism is spread not only from human to human but also to all surfaces touched by contaminated hands.

Cleanitise All Purpose Surface Cleaner, Sanitiser and Degreaser has been tested for the evaluation of sporicidal activity of chemical disinfectants against Clostridium Difficile using standard EU protocols in laboratory. It was found that Cleanitise, when diluted to 10.0% v/v, passed the requirements of
EN 13704 for sporicidal activity in 60 minutes at 20°C under ‘clean’ conditions against Clostridium Difficile.

Using Cleanitise as a hospital or ambulance cleaning product has an aggressive activity on C. Diff but has also been shown to have a residual effect on surfaces for several hours after application and this will help to reduce the colonisation of C. Diff on surfaces and hence the spread of the organism in the hospital environment. Cleanitise is the perfect product for infection control.

Cleanitise is the best all-purposes surface cleaner sanitiser and degreaser with effective germkill.

A dynamic bactericidal hard surface and equipment cleaner with superior Antimicrobial properties and complies according to BS EN 1040 and BS EN 1276 criteria achieving 99.9% germkill. Effective against Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff), MRSA and other strains of bacteria prevalent within healthcare.

All vehicles are equipped to a high base level, then supplemented with specialist equipment depending upon the patient’s condition. Their Iveco’s ambulances are high dependency units designed to accommodate 1-2 stretchers or an incubator, up to six seated patients, two wheelchairs, and a crew of two. Power stretcher lifts and full medical facilities make these vehicles ideal for the transport of cardiac, spinal, post-operation and family units.

Medicar European has chosen Cleanitise and the Cleanitise Fogger for infection control and the cleaning and decontamination of their ambulance units. The Cleanitise ambulance cleaning and disinfection fogging system is highly effective as its fine vapour accesses all surfaces and fixtures and fitting killing all surface bacteria leaving the ambulance contaminate free.

Bristol company, Professional Hygiene Services, the market leaders in hygiene services in the South West, recommend Cleanitise for sanitary bin disinfection and calls for an addition to the Cleanitise range.

Paul Tippins, managing Director said:

“We use a wet wipe to sanitise the inside of the lids of our sanitary bins when we service them. When we clean our sanitary bins before putting them in clients sites we use Cleanitise. Could you make an antibac cleanitise wipe that could break down dried blood and sanitise the surface? A Cleanitise wipe would be a good add-on to the range.”

Cleanitise tested for antimicrobial efficacy against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Consultant microbiologist, D C Watson BSc, CBiol, MIBiol, MIFST, ACIEHO, ARSM of Abbott Analytical – the Consulting Scientists to the Disinfectant Industry, has recently conducted tests with Cleanitise, the All Purpose Surface Cleaner, Sanitiser and Degreaser, for antimicrobial efficacy against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). After testing for MRSA infection control he said:

Cleanitise All Purpose Surface Cleaner, Sanitiser and Degreaser has been tested for antimicrobial efficacy against C (MRSA) using standard EU protocols in this laboratory. It has been found to be extremely effective when diluted to 10% volume in hard water giving a total kill after five minutes, with an initial inoculum of greater than 100 million (108) bacteria per millilitre of test suspension.
Because MRSA is a particularly difficult organism to kill with standard sanitisers it’s success as a persistent pathogen in the hospital environment is largely due to ineffective cleaning and lack of residual activity on surfaces and it’s removal requires aggressive action by these chemicals. The organism is spread not only from human to human but also to all surfaces touched by contaminated hands. Cleanitise not only has this aggressive activity on MRSA but has also been shown to have a residual effect on surfaces for several hours after application and this will help to reduce the colonisation of MRSA on surfaces and hence the spread of the organism in the hospital environment.

After the tests for MRSA infection control were completed and the positive results confirmed, it was recommended that a back-up of an EN13697 surface test using MRSA to support these finding should be conducted. These tests have now been commissioned and we are awaiting the results. It is anticipated that these test results will confirm that Cleanitise is the ideal hospital cleaning product for regular cleaning of wards, equipment etc in order to reduce the spread of MRSA and infection control.
